Katya’s University of Nebraska Press book Bluegrass Baseball: A Year in the Minor League Life was rated one of the “top ten” non-fiction books of 2012 by Shelf Awareness and East Bay Express and a finalist for the 2013 Kentucky Literary Award. Bluegrass Baseball follows Kentucky’s four minor league teams through a single season, telling the larger story of baseball in America’s smaller venues, where the game in its purest form is still valued and warmly embraced.

Benjamin Hill of MLB.com said “Bluegrass Baseball distinguishes itself through Cengel's detailed reporting as well as her willingness to extend the book's reach beyond the players themselves.”

Bluegrass Baseball was on WNPR’s August 24, 2016 show about independent league baseball and on the World Series-winning San Francisco Giants’ pregame show Memorial Day 2013 weekend with Marty Lurie.

If you don’t know what cat food and cave shrimp have in common with Kentucky baseball, join Katya Cengel on her enlightening and entertaining odyssey with the state’s professional teams. She takes us places where fans can’t typically go and introduces us to people whose personal stories make the balls and strikes much more interesting.
